Job Description
POSITION TITLE: Substitute School Nurse
DEPARTMENT: Health Services
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS: A. Certification required: Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse licensed to practice
professional nursing in South Dakota.
B. Experience Required: Healthcare experience working with pediatric and young adult populations.
Demonstrates knowledge of public health procedures, best practice, and pediatric and adolescent
nursing care. C. Experience Desired: A minimum of three years of experience in the nursing/healthcare field.
School nursing experience ideal.
D. Other Requirements: Interest in helping and tending to the health needs of children and
adolescents. Respect for confidentiality of information. Ability to willingly accept nursing
supervision and consultation. Capacity to calmly and professionally deal with stressful situations.
Excellent time management skills and ability to multitask. Proficient computer skills, and efficient
verbal and written communication skills. Must hold a valid driver’s licenses, have reliable
transportation, and carry proof of insurance. E. Special Requirements: Current SD RN or LPN License, Current CPR Certification
REPORTS TO: District Nurse Manager
RECEIVES GUIDANCE FROM: Health Services Nurse Educator, Building Principal, School Nurse RN BASIC FUNCTION/PURPOSE OF POSITION: School nurses strengthen and facilitate the educational
process by providing the fullest possible educational opportunity for each student by minimizing absence
due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the schools. A substitute nurse will provide
basic health care via collaborative efforts with the school nurse team. This position requires flexibility,
strong situational leadership, ability to adapt to changing circumstances, able to work courteously and
cooperatively with administration, staff, and families, and to demonstrate respect, compassion, and caring
for children.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES: A. Provide first aid and emergency care for students and staff in the event of illness or accident
B. Administer medications as ordered following the guidance of SD BON and the Nurse Practice Act
C. Provide care to students as outlined in the Individualized Health Care Plan and Emergency Action Plan
D. Contribute to the coordination and assist with the implementation of health screening programs
E. Attend to the physical needs of the student(s), including moving, positioning, assisting with personal
hygiene needs F. Obtain, review, and document health records and developmental history G. Maintain and update student health records and databases at assigned site
H. Document daily visits, medication administration, phone calls, and data entry
I. Participate in the evaluation of responses to nursing interventions
J. Facilitate collaboration and communication between interdisciplinary team members to meet
students’ goals K. Maintain current immunization records and provide recommended immunizations as prescribed by
the State of South Dakota L. Maintain safe and effective nursing practice that complies with federal, state, and district policies and
procedures M. Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization
programs, early detection, surveillance and reporting of contagious diseases N. Utilize PPE properly and follows isolation practices as needed for infectious conditions
O. Contact parents, guardians, emergency contacts and/or agencies as appropriate
P. Assist and maintain a clean and healthy environment at assigned site
Q. Assist in keeping health room supplies stocked
R. Maintain confidentiality and abide by HIPAA and FERPA regulations
S. Communicate and work with all school staff in a team approach
T. Respond constructively to supervision
U. Attend staff meetings as required
V. Participate in ongoing professional growth activities
W. Other job duties as assigned
LIMITATIONS: Licensed Practical Nurses and Registered Nurses must work only within their licensed scope of practice.
EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board of Education's
policy on evaluation for professional personnel.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This is a substitute only position to be filled and utilized as situation demands.
