JOB DESCRIPTION I. POSITION TITLE: School Nurse II. QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS: A. Education Level: Registered Professional Nurse, a BSN degree, preferred.

Licensed to practice professional nursing in South Dakota. B. Experience Desired: Possesses knowledge of public health procedure and
practice, and pediatric/adolescent nursing care. Have knowledge in
implementation of Individual Education plan process, special education law,
and 504 Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and implementation of 504 plans. C. Other Requirements: Possess excellent oral and written communication
skills. Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds intermittently during the workday. III. REPORTS TO: District Nurse Manager IV. RECEIVES GUIDANCE FROM: A. Building Principal

C. District Nurse Manager V. SUPERVISES: None VI. BASIC FUNCTION/PURPOSE OF POSITION: School nurses strengthen and facilitate the educational process by improving and
protecting the health status of children and assistance in the removal or
modification of health-related barriers to the learning process. The major focus of
school nursing services is the prevention of illness and disability, and the early
detection and correction of health problems. VII. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES: A. Promote health assessments.

B. Provide health assessments.
1. Obtain health and developmental history.
2. Screen and evaluate findings of deficit in vision, scoliosis, growth

etc. 3. Observe child for development and health patterns in making
nursing assessment and nursing diagnosis. 4. Identify deviant health findings. C. Develop and implement Individualized Health Care Plans (IHP) and

Emergency Action Plans (EAP)
1. Interpret health status of pupils to parents and school personnel
2. Initiate referrals to parents, school personnel and community health

resources for intervention, remediation and follow-through. 3. Recommend and help implement modification of school programs
to meet students' health needs. 4. Utilize existing health resources to provide appropriate care of
students. 5. Develop procedures and provides for crisis intervention for acute
illness, injury and emotional disturbances. D. Maintain, evaluate, and interpret cumulative health data to accommodate

individual needs of students. E. Participate as the health team specialist on the child education evaluation
team to develop the Individual Education Plan (IEP). F. Participate in home visits to assess the family's needs as related to the
child's health. G. Plan and implement school health management protocols for the child with
special health needs, including the administration of medication. H. Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases through
preventive immunization programs, early detection, surveillance and
reporting of contagious diseases. I. Provide Health Education.

1. Teach parenting skills as they relate to child development and
health needs of children.

2. Provide direct health education/counseling to assist
students/families in making decisions on health and lifestyles that
affect health 3. Counsel with students concerning menstruation/maturation,
HIV/AIDS, (pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, mental health
issues, substance abuse) in order to facilitate responsible decision-
making practices. J. Provide health counseling for staff and administration.

person between the home, school and community. L. Recommend provisions for a school environment conducive to learning. M. Participate in ongoing professional growth activities. N. Monitor and comply with federal, state and district policies and
procedures. O. Maintain the confidentiality of students and their families. P. Perform other duties as assigned. VIII. EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of

the board of education's policy on evaluation for professional personnel. IX. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Nine (9) month work year. Salary and work year to be established by the board
