JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Freshman Seminar DEPARTMENT: Freshman Academy QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS: A. Education required: Bachelor's degree or appropriate industry background that qualifies
the teacher for a South Dakota Career teaching certificate.

B. Education Preferred: South Dakota teacher certification. C. Experience Required: Secondary teaching experience. D. Experience Preferred: Work experience in a K-12 education setting or

training environment.

E. Other Requirements:
Knowledge of: Subject areas appropriate to assignment; effective behavior management
techniques; effective instructional techniques; rules and procedures for student safety.
Experience and/or knowledge of using state approved instructional frameworks which
teach and assess related state and national standards including 21st Century Skills.
Knowledge of best practices in career-connected learning. Skill in: Interpersonal communications; designing and implementing lesson plans with
differentiated instruction. Experience or ability to teach foundational content and
knowledge of state secondary education standards.

Ability to: Establish and maintain effective, positive working relationships with
stakeholders; adapt to change and remain flexible; organize project-based learning
experiences for students; manage student behavior; use good judgement to maintain a
safe learning environment; provide instruction and demonstrate techniques; use
necessary industry standard equipment.

REPORTS TO: Building Principal(s) RECEIVES GUIDANCE FROM: Director of Teaching, Learning & Innovation SUPERVISES: Students BASIC FUNCTION/PURPOSE OF POSITION: The purpose of this position is to provide dynamic classroom instruction for the Freshman
Academy. This Academy provides foundational instruction for students proceeding into the RCAS
Academies, including overviews of all RCAS Academies. The Freshman Academy is designed to
set students up for success in high school by providing foundational required coursework to
include support in the development of time management, study skills, and a college, career, and
life plan.

This position will support students’ development of academic, technical, and work readiness
skills. Teacher will support student achievement through differentiated instructional methods.

A successful candidate will provide expertise and innovation to maximize learning and teaching
and work within an academy model, thereby working collaboratively with other teachers,
community partners, industry professionals, and other stakeholders. This position will advance
both project-based and career-connected learning experiences for the students in the Freshman
Academy.

This position supports Academy goals, strategies, and objectives to internal and external
stakeholders. The teacher will participate in development of course content, provide career-
connected learning opportunities for students, and participate in career-focused professional
development.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES: 1. Fosters an educational environment conducive to the learning and maturation process of
assigned students; plans an instructional program designed to meet individual student and
whole group needs; prepares lesson plans.

2. Uses necessary and appropriate instructional methods and materials, which are suited to

the well-being of the students and to the nature of the learning activities, program and/or
curriculum involved; implements established program or curriculum objectives; attends in-
service training and continues to improve professional growth through study and

experimentation to remain current in methods and techniques for instruction. 3. Establishes and implements, in a positive and supportive manner, classroom policies and
procedures governing student behavior and conduct; provides guidance, counseling, and
discipline to encourage students to meet standards of achievement and conduct; makes
referrals for assistance where appropriate.

4. Confers with students, parents or guardians, and other staff, maintaining an open positive

relationship as appropriate to provide guidance and evaluation, and to encourage student
achievement.

5. Establishes classroom goals and objectives, in conformation with courses of study specified by

State and District statutes, regulations and guidelines; evaluates and records student progress
using a variety of assessment types; prepares reports for parents or guardians.

6. Collects and interprets a variety of data; provides reports for administrative purposes. 7. Directs the activities of assigned non-certificated personnel. 8. Attends or participates in all required staff meetings and other activities deemed

necessary by the District and/or building principal, in order to accomplish the objectives of the
position and for professional achievement.

EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board of
Education's policy on evaluation for professional personnel.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Nine (9) month work year. Salary and work year as established by the Board of Education. The above job description is intended to describe the general content of the requirements for the
